Scientific research and publications

We strive to advance the development and collaboration of the psychological and judicial field with our research and publications. The starting point of our research is to serve the means and goals of our firm’s work. A part of our research is done in collaboration with researchers from outside of our firm, with EMDR Therapy Center Mementos and with the institution of behavioral sciences at the University of Helsinki.

PsyJuridica follows the guidelines concerning ethical scientific practice in Finland set by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.

Many people encounter narcissistic or psychopathic people in their work or personal lives. 100 kysymystä narsismista ja psykopatiasta: psykologin selviytymisopas (in Finnish) is meant to be a guidebook for working with narcissistic or psychopathic people in the workplace, in relationships and in family life. The book is formed of questions such as what narcissism is about, how narcissism and psychopathy differ, how narcissistic or psychopathic people can be identified and if it is possible to cure narcissism or psychopathy. The book offers information about the effects these people have on their surroundings and how they act in conflict situations. The book provides psychotherapeutic tools and methods to deal with the emotions raised by being in contact with narcissistic or psychopathic people and also answers important questions about whether it is necessary to end such relationships or if it is possible to adapt and keep going.

The publication is the first Nordic research concerning the child’s alienation from a parent based on empirical studies. The publication is based on research done by PsyJuridica Ltd. in collaboration with the institution of behavioural sciences at the University of Helsinki. 101 parents that had gone through a divorce or separation and had been exposed to alienation from their child answered a questionnaire online. The questionnaire looked into the ways that had been used to alienate the parent and how that had affected the child and the targeted parent. The publication includes a large review of scientific research from abroad concerning alienation. In the reflection part of the publication many questions arise concerning the functionality of the social services, how alienation is handled and how it’s acknowledged while dealing with custody battles.

Psychopathy and Law: A Practitioners Guide is a book edited by Helinä Häkkänen-Nyholm and Jan-Olof Nyholm which gives theoretical and practical information about psychopathy to people who have been forced to face psychopaths in their life. More than 20 Finnish and foreign experts of psychopathy have participated in writing the book. It includes many practical examples. The chapters cover the history of psychopathy, evaluating psychopathy, psychopathy in prisons, the brain functions of a psychopath, the psychopathy of women and children, psychopathy and violence, psychopathy in white-collar crimes, interrogating a psychopath and psychopathy in a family, amongst other subjects. Psykopatia is a book edited by Helinä Häkkänen-Nyholm and published by Edita. The book is the first Finnish textbook on psychopathy. It is used as a textbook in university studies on psychology, but it’s also suited for people who want to learn more about psychopathy due to their situation in life.
